来月の１２日（土）にGreg Hainesさんの日本ツアーで演奏することになりました。
今回は教会で演奏させていただきます。
教会で演奏するのは私にとって特別な意味を持つので、良い演奏ができればと思います。
個人的は季節と場所が完璧なライブなので楽しみです。
共演者もすてきなアーティストばかりなので、一オーディエンスとしても楽しみにしています。

2010年machinefabriek達と共に来日したGreg Hainesが、今年はソロピアノepを携えて単独で来日します。
したがって今ツアー、Gregのセットはピアノ曲が中心になります。
彼のミニマルで気持ちよく流れる音色と、素晴らしい共演者と作る至福の時間を皆様にお届けいたします。
初日の富山は、トウヤマタケオと共にピアノだけの演奏会を。
土曜日は下北沢の教会で、新作も好評なChihei Hatakeyama,FJORDNEを迎えて白昼夢のような時間を。
京都では90年前の古いピアノがあるカフェバーで、お酒ときれいな音がある夜を。

晩秋にピッタリな音楽を聞きに是非お越しください。

The first tracks I made were "Awakening" and "Gathering".
These two tracks set the atmosphere of the album.



"Awakening"
The first image of this track was to express "decadence".
Not just the weakness of it but also the strength of it.
I started writing the score for the horns. Once that was finished, it all came naturally.
I played some keys over it and created movement in the track.



"Gathering"
I was especially careful creating the lead sheet for this track.
I had a specific image in my mind of what kind of music I wanted to write.
I rewrote the track so many times that I don't remember what it sounded like in the beginning.

When I make an album, I always start from an image.
Sometimes it's a conversation I have with a person, sometimes it's a piece of art that I see or listen to.
This time it was a story that I had in mind for a while.

For this album, I wanted to make an album that had an antique feeling.
Sounds that are not clean. Sounds that are dusty and incomplete.
Not only the texture of the sounds were very important for this album, but also harmony.
I have always thought of harmony to be something sporadic. Not improvised but captured accidentally. And then molded into a figure.

But before making this album, I noticed the need to change the balance between accidental harmony and constructed harmony in my music.
The balance emphasized accidental harmony in the past albums that I made and that fit the musical process of that time.
In making "charles rendition", I needed a more complex harmony structure to express the musical ideas that I had so I shifted to a more constructed harmony.
That doesn't mean moving toward "classical" style music but more of a "jazz" style.
I have always admired how the jazz giants of the past express music from just a lead sheet (a sheet with only the melody and chords).
My goal was to make "lead sheets" for my tracks to leave space for improvisation.
Improvisation based on a loose harmonic structure.
This was the main theme for "Charles Rendition".

いざ、形になって色々な場所にそれが届いていると気づくとなんともいえないような気持ちになります。

I received an updated from Ricks (Kitchen.) of the artwork for my upcoming album, "Charles Rendition".

The sound will be a little different from my previous albums and so will the artwork.

The artwork I've seen so far is beautiful and it expresses the music perfectly.

I can't wait to see the completed product!

ライブでは来年の春に同レーベルからリリースを予定している"charles rendition"というアルバムからの曲を使い、演奏をしました。
ドラマーにはAngstromのドラマーであるMori Yushi君に叩いてもらい、アルバムにはないライブらしい躍動感を足してもらいました。
いつもいつもアーティスト側にたってサポートしてくれるKitchen. Label のRicks には感謝しています。

今週末は鳴響です。もうpH:3.0なんですね。
僕もFJORDNEとして出演させていただいた時を思い出します。
今年は出演できないのですが、本当に心温まるイベントなのでぜひ宮城県の鳴子温泉まで足を運んでみてはいかがでしょうか？
相変わらずすてきなアーティストが多く出演します。

告知をしなければと思いつつ、ついつい先延ばしにしていたのですが、１１月２６日（金）にFJORDNEとしてライブに出演します。
先延ばしにしていたせいで、すでにチケットは完売してしまったそうです。
haruka nakamuraさんのKitchen. からの最新アルバム"twilight"のツアーとKitchen. レーベルのショーケースとしてのライブです。
ライブ会場であるsonoriumという場所はまだ写真でしか見ていませんが、すごく素敵な場所のようです。
とにかく出演者が素敵な方ばかりで自分自身も見るのを楽しみにしています。

FJORDNEとしては、Kitchen. からリリースする次のアルバム"charles rendition"を凝縮したライブができればと思っています。
今回もドラマーのyushi君におねがいして叩いてもらうことになりました。自分はグランドピアノを弾きます。

Andrew Hill / Smoke Stack

ベース２名、ドラム、ピアノという不規則なピアノトリオ（カルテット）のアルバム。
このアルバムはヒルの初期の録音で、色々実験しているのが伝わってきます。
ここでは、完全にフリーには行かないけど、バップでもない演奏が聴けます。
この録音後のアルバムからは、ヒルの魅力である「統制のとれたフリー」が完成されますので、その過渡期の作品として楽しめます。

2 bass, 1 drum, 1 piano. This is an irregular piano trio (quartet) album.
This is an early Andrew Hill album and you can hear that he is experimenting many ideas.
It’s not completely free but not bop. After this recording, he succeeds in completing his “controlled fee jazz”.
It’s interesting to listen to this album as a transition stage to that.

最新作”Whiteout”がすばらしかった、Rune Grammofon所属のグループのデビュー作を見つけたので、思わず購入してしまいました。
彼らの特徴である、透明度、雄大さはこのアルバムからも聞き取れ、曲が良く練られています。
曲の展開や演奏が練られている分、自由度の高いジャズというよりはプログレッシブロックに聞こえます。
ここではプロデューサーとしてArve Henriksenが活躍しています。

This is the debut album of the group of Rune Grammofon. Their latest album “Whiteout” was great so I couldn’t help buying this when I found it.
In this album you can already hear the clearness and magestic sound that are their characteristics now. All of the tracks are constructed well and that makes it sound like progressive rock rather that jazz where there is more freedom.
The producer of this album is Arve Henriksen.

I had completely forgotten to write about this in my blog.
I released the album “a letter from yesterday” as starke last year, and a Japanese artist called okamotonoriaki, made a PV for one of the tracks called “yet another task”.
This PV is perfect for the track. I was really surprised when I saw it first because I could feel how well he thought about the music before making the PV.

Paul Bley / Solo in Mondsee

ポールブレイのアルバムでは “Open, to Love” を聴いてきましたので、このひさしぶりのソロレコーディングを楽しみにしていました。曲の表記が番号を振られているだけなのですが、一つ一つの曲が別々に主張しており、いくつかの曲はあらかじめ書かれているものとしか思えない美しさを持っています。このアルバムはブレイがまだ音楽への探究心が衰えていないことを実証しています。

I have been listening to Bley’s solo piano masterpiece, “Open, to love” for a long time so I was looking forward to this solo recording. The songs on this album are just numbered but each piece is really different. Some of them sound as if they were written. This album displays how Bley’s energy for music hasn’t declined.


Chie Ayado / Best

所謂「ベストアルバム」というものは好みません。しかし、このアルバムは違います。歌の力があまりにも強いため、曲がどこから来ているのかを考えさせない強さを持っています。声の持つ力を再認識させられます。

I don’t like “Best” albums where they just compile songs taken from different albums. But this best album by Chie Ayado is something different. The singing is so powerful that there is no need to think about whether each song is from another album or not. It makes you realize the power singing has.

Owen / At Home With Owen

Joan Of Arc のドラマーのソロ名義のアルバム。このキンセラ兄弟の底なしの創作意欲にはびっくりさせられる。Owenではギターを弾き、歌を歌う。この歌の力の抜け具合がちょうど良く、彼の作る曲とマッチする。その曲がとにかく良く、Joan Of Arc とは違って、大衆性も含んでいる気がする。結局、良いメロディーがあればジャンルを超越する。

A solo album from Joan Of Arc’s drummer. The creativity of the Kinsella brothers always amazes me. For Owen, he plays the guitar and sings. He is not a technical vocalist but the loose vocal style matches the songs he makes. The songs are great and they are a lot different from the songs by Joan of Arc. They are more “pop”. In the end, it makes you realize that melody is what’s important.


Marc Copland / Haunted Hearts & Other Ballads

コープランドはECMにいてもおかしくないアーティストだと思う。土臭さがなく、洗練されていて、美しい。彼は多くのスタンダードを取り上げているが、それをただ普通に弾いていることがない。かなりリハーモナイズを施し、はじめ元曲がわからないくらい。しかし、それが曲の新たな美しさを生み出し、彼のオリジナル曲に変身する。いつも取り上げる曲にエヴァンスの愛奏曲が入っているのだが、今回はコルトレーンの愛奏曲（My Favorite Things, Crescent） が収録されている。

Marc Copland is an artist that I feel that should be on the ECM label. His doesn’t have the earthy feel, his playing is elegant and beautiful. He plays a lot of standards but never in an ordinary way. He reharmonizes it until you can barely notice that it’s a standard. But this makes him so original and it brings out another beauty of the song. He picks out a lot of standards that Evans used to play, but in this album he has a lot of Coltrane tracks (My Favorite Things, Crescent).

Yushi (starke) and I have written 10 CDs that we have been influenced by for a net magazine called Textura. On that same website, FJORDE’s “The Setting Sun“ has been chosen as one of the memorable albums of this year. Thank you very much Textura.

Nobukazu Takemura / 10th

竹村延和は私が長い間、あこがれているアーティスト。彼の音楽へのつながり方かたが他のアーティストと違うと感じる。彼の音楽は主観的ではなく、必ず客観的であると思う。彼はインタビューで「音楽では感情が邪魔になる」といっている。それに１００％同意するわけではないが、その考え方が彼の音楽の独自性を生んでいるのだろう。彼は数多くの作品をリリースしていて、アヴァンギャルドなものから表面的にポップに聞こえるものまで。これは後者に部類されるアルバム。

Nobukazu Takemura is an artist that I have admired for a long time. The way he connects to music is a bit different from other artist. It’s always from an objective point of view. He says that emotion gets in the way of the music. I don’t fully agree with this point but I think it’s the reason why his music is so different. He has released a number of albums and some of them are really avant-garde and some of them are really pop (although not simple pop music). This one is one of his pop albums.


Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions / Bavarian Fruit Bread

このアルバムはHope Sandoval とMy Bloody Valentine のドラマーであるColm Ó Cíosóig の二人と何人かのミュージシャンから作られている。なかでもあのBert Jansch が参加している曲は本当に美しい。どの曲も最後にはホープの魔術的なボーカルによってまとめられている。彼女は声量で勝負する歌手でもないし、最近多い、ウィスパー系のボーカルでもない。彼女の声はまた聞きたくなる不思議な力を持っている。このアルバムは１曲め”Drop”（Jesus and Mary Chainのカバー）の最初の歌いだしで必ず引き込まれてしまう。彼女の以前のバンド、Mazzy Star のリリースもおすすめです。

This album is basically made by the Hope Sandoval and My Bloody Valentine’s drummer, Colm Ó Cíosóig with the help by a few musicians. Bert Jansch is on a few tracks with his beautiful acoustic guitar playing which helps out a lot to make the mood of the music. Everything track is completed with Hope’s magical voice. She’s not the type of vocalist who sings out loud. She sings very quietly but not like the whisper vocalists you hear often today. Her voice has a strange power in it which makes you want to listen. I also recommend all her albums as Mazzy Star.

Tomasz Stanko / Suspended Night

トーマススタンコはは儚く、美しいラインを奏でることで有名なポーランドのトランペッター。このアルバムは特に、彼のそのような強みがはっきりとわかるアルバム。その美しさの一翼を担っているのがバックを固めているMarcin Wasilewski のトリオです。トーマスは新しい地元の才能を発掘することに長けていて、これまでも彼のグループにはBobo Stenson も在籍していた。Marcin の演奏はとてもシンプルで美しく、時にキースの影響を感じられる。そして、メロディーには北欧のエッセンスを感じることができる。

Tomasz Stanko is a trumpeter from Poland. He is known for his beautiful spacious phrases. This album especially emphasizes his strengths. The tracks on this album are mostly calm and beautiful with the help of Marcin Wasilewski’s trio who are also an ECM artist. Tomasz Stanko has the ability to find new talents from the Scandinavian area. There used to be Bobo Stenson in his group. Marcin Wasilewski’s playing is very simple and a bit Jarrett like and has the Norwegian taste in his melodies.


Keith Jarrett / Radiance

本当はキースの新しいアルバム”Testament”について書こうとしていたのだが、どうしてもこのアルバムに帰ってきてしまう。このアルバムはキースの巨大なディスコグラフィーの中では比較的新しいソロアルバム。このアルバムの気に入っているところは、彼の多様な音楽性をあらわすバランスがちょうどいい。ジャズから現代音楽、シンプルなメロディー。いつか、彼の完全即興のソロライブを見てみたい。

I was going to write about his new album, “Testament” but this listening to this album again, I had to write about it. Radiance is a fairly new album out of Jarrett’s enormous catalogue of albums but I think this one has a great balance to show his diversity in genres. He goes from jazz to contemporary classical to avant-garde and back to simple melodic songs. I always come back to this album recently. I just wish to have a chance to see him live and experience his improvised music.

Radka Toneff & Steve Dobrogosz / Fairytales

I found this CD at a CD select shop in Nishiogikubo called, “Ame to Kyujitsu”. I was complete blown away listening to the first track. It starts off with the beautiful voice of Radka Toneff. Recently there are a lot of whisper style vocals around me but using this style, it is sometimes hard to recognize if the singer is a real artist or not. By listening to this album, I feel the strength and will in the voice. The pianist accompanying her is Steve Dobrogosz who is great at it. Beautiful Scandinavian music.

先日、西荻窪にあるＣＤセレクトショップ「雨と休日」にて購入しました。Radka Toneffの出だしのボーカルを視聴したときにやられました。電子音楽でよくとられる、ウィスパーボーカルという手法は表現者であるのか表現者でないのか、あいまいにしてしまう傾向があると思うのですが、このアルバムを聞いているとしっかりと勝負していること（こっちのほうが当たり前なのですが）が逆に新鮮に感じます。歌を伴奏しているSteve Dobrogoszのピアノも主張しすぎず、とても良いです。北欧らしく、澄んでいる音楽です。


Ornette Coleman / Science Fiction

This album is one that I especially like out of all Ornette Coleman albums. He had the destiny to push forward the boundaries of “jazz music” just like Miles did. The special thing about him is that he always succeeded in doing that. In this album, there is an Indian vocalist singing and Don Cherry plays. A lot of the tracks are doing something different.

オーネットコールマンの作品の中でも、好きな一枚です。マイルスもそうであったように、ジャズの革新を推し進める宿命を背負っているなか、いつもそれにこたえているところに巨大な創作エネルギーを感じます。
このアルバムではインドのボーカルが登場したり、ドンチェリーが参加していてどの曲も驚かされます。

Red Garland / A Garland of Red

レッドガーランドのピアノはいつも心地よい。彼はスタンダードを曲の持つイメージを壊さずにメロディーを奏でる。座って落ち着きたい時にちょうど良い音楽。彼のプレイには暗い曲でさえも、必ず陽気な要素が聞こえる。

Red Garland’s piano is always relaxing. He takes standards and plays them as not to break the image of the melody. Just the right kind of music when you want to sit back and relax. He has a cheerful mood in everything he plays even when it’s a sad song.


Sun Ra / Space is the Place

私にとって彼は音楽を聞くというより、その背後にあるものを感じるタイプのアーティストのように思う。これは彼のアーケストラのアルバムの中でも有名なもの。このアルバムから感じられるエネルギーは凄いとしか言いようがない。

To me, he is an artist who you don’t listen to the music but feel the power and strength behind it. This is one of his best known albums of his Arkestra. The energy you can feel from the album is just amazing.

Alpha and Omega / Watch and Pray

イギリスのニュールーツに所属するアーティストです。彼らのアルバムはいつもブレがなく、一貫しています。以前は電子ビートを使ったダブが好きではなかったのですが、彼らの音楽を聴いてからそのイメージが変わりました。彼らの音はどのようにミックスをしているのかはわからないのですが、独特のアナログ感が全体を統一しています。

This is an album from a new roots band from England. Their albums are always carefully made and this one is not an exception.
I have never liked dub/reggae using electronic beats but they changed that completely.
They have a strong analogue sound that blends in with their mix.


Scientist / Dub in the Roots Tradition

これはオリジナルのアルバムではなく、７０年代のトラックをまとめたものらしいです。
ダブはミックスにおいての自由さを再認識させてくれるところがこの音楽の好きなところです。プロデューサーはミキシングのルールを破壊しながらも音楽は壊さない。
Scientistはあまり過激なダブミックスはしないが、私にはそれがちょうど良く聞こえます。
このアルバムでトラックを演奏しているのがSoul Syndicates と　Roots Radics です。

This album is not an original but a compilation of his works from the 70's.
The free feeling that dub music has is the reason I love the music so much. The producers try to break the rules of mixing without breaking the music that's happening.
Scientist's dub is not too heavily processed and it is just right for me.
In this album the tracks are played by Soul Syndicates and Roots Radics.

この２人のアーティストがコラボレーションをすると聞いたときからすごいものができると思っていました。このアルバムの音楽は複雑で入り組んでいますが、ダブ特有の陽気な要素を残しているところに共作の醍醐味を感じます。

DJ Spooky is an artist who has no boarders. He goes to anywhere from hip-hop to jazz to techno and this time dub/reggae.
I knew that the outcome from the collaboration of these 2 artists would be great.
The music is complex and twisted but come together because of the dubbed mix.
